Soul, or sometimes R&B, often has strong elements and influence of gospel. It often contains elements like soul shouting, high emotion, and call and response. Soul music subjects can vary: gospel, heartache, pain, love, etc. Soul music often times has a slower beat. 

Gospel usually incorporates a choral element. While it too shares high emotion and call and response, it's subject matter tends to be focused on the gospel, Jesus, and the various teaching from the Bible. Gospel music tends to be more upbeat and faster.
