Two rival troupes during the restoration were known as Thomas Killigrew and William Davenant. They competed with each other for the restoration era (Cynical, Courtly Era) and formed a named between their rivalry as Killigrew-Davenant competition.

EXPLANATION:

Thomas Killigrew and Davenant were the sporadic figures in British Renaissance theatre. Their career covered the Caroline and Restoration eras. Killigrew and Davenant also the ones who were energetic before and after the British Civil War and during the Interregnum period.

Davenant once again discovered himself in law trouble in 1659, when he was jailed for his role in Sir George Booth's revolt in Cheshire after Cromwell's death. However, he was released the same year and went once again to France. When Charles II was returned to the throne, Davenant returned to England.  

Moreover, the Restoration became the cause of the reopening of theaters, which had been shut because of the influence of puritans under Cromwell. In 1660, he was publicly listed as one of two theatrical patentees, together with Thomas Killigrew, who gained a monopoly on public theater performances.

Thomas Killigrew was bestowed a royal warrant to establish a theater company in 1660—which offered Killigrew the main role in the revival of English drama. Killigrew defeated Davenant to debut, at the Gibbon’s Tennis Court in Clare Market, with the novel King's Company.
