Canaan was the name of a large and prosperous country which corresponds roughly to present-day Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Israel and was also known as Phoenicia. Canaan, area variously defined in historical and biblical literature, but always centered on Palestine. Its original pre-Israelite inhabitants were called Canaanites.  The names Canaan and Canaanite occur in cuneiform, Egyptian, and Phoenician writings from about the 15th century B.C. as well as in the Old Testament.

Canaanite Artifacts. The long history of Jerusalem began well before it was captured by King David and made into the Capital of the people of Israel 3,000 years ago. Archaeological findings indicate the existence of a settlement in Jerusalem in the 3rd millennium BCE.

According to the Hebrew Bible, Solomon’s Temple also known as the first temple, was the Holy Temple in ancient Jerusalem before its destruction by Nebuchadnezzar II after the Siege of Jerusalem of 587 BCE and its subsequent replacement with the Second Temple in the 6th century BCE.

The interactions between these groups were not entirely friendly. At one point the Assyrians took over the Hebrews sacred land, Jerusalem, Israel. There were many scuffles and conflicts between these groups.

1.     Imagine you are a farmer living in the hills of ancient Greece. Your brother-in-law, a fisherman who lives on the coast, has just come to visit, and the two of you sit down to talk about your lives and work. Write down what you, as a farmer, might talk about, such as your crops and farm animals. Then write what your brother-in-law might tell you about his experiences as a fisherman. Be sure to mention the weather and climate and how they affect your work and his. Then, talk about the city-states in which you both live. Explain how geography may have influenced the region to develop separate city-states instead of one government that unifies all the people.

If I were a farmer living in the hills of ancient Greece, and my brother-in-law came to visit I would say that I am growing olives, grapes, grain, corn, and wheat. I would also talk about the animal I am taking care of such as pigs, sheep, and goats. The summers here are very hot and the winters are very cold. The hotness of the sun helps grow my plants; but sometimes the sun is too much and kills my plants. The winters are good, but my crops don’t grow because it is so cold. 

My brother-in-law would talk about the fish that he has acquired over time and some fish contests where he is living. There are sometimes high winds and it makes it hard to sail out, but sometimes the water is calm and beautiful.  The weather there is mostly the same there as it is here. There are some rivers, and people come and trade and buy stuff every so often.
