There were multiple mutual defense pacts in Europe, and years had passed since the last big war and some countries wanted to try out they’re new technology. Many countries were competing for dominance and power, including Austria-Hungary. Austria-Hungary was huge and was one of the most ethnically diverse nations in the world and this diversity had led to ethnic tension in the Empire. This led up to Serbian Nationalists attempting to kill Australia-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand. They tried to kill him by throwing a bomb at the road but it ended up blowing up a nearby car with multiple officers in it. Instead of getting to safety, Archduke Ferdinand was going to go to the hospital to visit aforementioned officers. Ferdinand’s driver took a wrong turn and stopped next to one the Nationalists, who shot Franz Ferdinand on the spot. The Assassination of the Archduke led to The Australia-Hungarians to present Serbia with a purposefully impossible list of demands and Serbia declined. The Empire went to war - Serbia went to Russia for help. Russia pulled France into the war and Austria-Hungary pulled Deutsches Kaiserreich (Germany) into the war.
