How could there be different explanations for the same event in history?

the accounts of what happened on a specific day are completely based on point of view. change that, and the story could become completely different. depending on people pre-existing bias and when/where they exsperienced the event, accounts can vary greatly. also, not all witnesses are experts in understanding what they saw or what it means. because of this people can have very different explanations for the same event in history.

theodore roosevelt challenged william to a duel, whoever won, got their policy sent to congress. it ended up in a stalemate, and both men were injured and sent to the hospital.
