One positive effect of the columbian exchange was that it increased food supply and nutrients to the populations of both europe and america.   there also was a significant improvement in the european diet, as well as a decline in the overall cost of food.   europeans were proven to live longer after the exchange, fewer infants died in their childhood, and there was a huge spike in population.   however, americans were also negatively affected by this exchange, despite the fact that they were introduced to many useful crops (wheat, rye, barley, and livestock [cattle & swine]). america was soon exposed to numerous harmful diseases such as measles and smallpox.   because most of the population didn't have immunity to most of these infectious diseases, a virtual epidemic resulted, which caused thousands of deaths.   overall, i think the most lasting result of the columbian exchange was the exponential population growth that occurred, which turned out to be an important factor preluding to the industrial revolution.   this marked increase in the european  population led to the agricultural revolution, which revolved around the introduction of new methods of crop  techniques.   this in turn allowed for the production of larger crops which could be sold for cheaper amounts, which gave people more free time.   this enabled them enough money to spend on technology innovation rather than food to survive.   in other words, if there hadn't been so many people living in that era, countless inventions that we know today wouldn't have been innovated.
