Slaves were not ship builders and factories were usually far away from the plantations. Many slavers were cooks, baby-sitters, cleaners, and so on. When it comes down to tools to be used in the local plantation, they'd be put to work as well. And obviously, they'd be the ones doing the seeding and harvesting.
