Toussaint L'Ouverture was the leader of the Haitian Revolution in 1971. He helped form a revolutionary movement out of the insurgency. Haiti (Saint-Domingue) was the most successful slave colony of that time and the first to reject race as a social structure. L'Ouverture actions led Haiti to independence from France. He began fighting in 1971 as a leader of a slave rebellion in Saint Domingue. He made an alliance with France when they abolished slavery and he started gaining control of the island.
