In 1907, just before the discovery of Horemheb's tomb, the team of Theodore M. Davis found a small camera, the so-called KV54, containing funerary objects with the name of Tutankhamun. Thinking that it was the tomb of this pharaoh, Davis concluded the excavation.

The British archaeologist Howard Carter (under Lord Carnarvon) discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings on November 4, 1922, near the entrance of Ramses VI, the KV35. The finding renewed the interest of the western world for Egyptology. Carter notified Carnarvon and on November 26 both men were the first to enter the tomb in 3300 years. Then, exclaimed his famous phrase: "I see wonderful things."

After weeks of careful excavation, on March 20, 1923 Carter opened the inner chamber and discovered the pharaoh's sarcophagus.

Since the first flight of stairs appeared on November 4, 1922, the progress of the excavation was slow and thorough, concluding on November 8, 1930, the date on which the last objects were removed.
