Read the two passages from Pushing the Bear. Passage 1:
MARITOLE
"This cabin is minel" The words spit from my mouth. My
body was stiff as a beam. The soldier grabbed me andd
threw me outside the door. I heard the soldier yell at the
people in the cabin. There was a struggle, and he came
out with the cooking pot and blankets he ripped from the
bed. "The musket," I told him. "My forks and ladles. The
quilts my grandmother made. Our corn!"
He yelled at me, but I didn't understand his words. He
shot into the air, and another soldier came riding up the
wagon ruts.
He picked me up and tried to get me on his horse, but I
kicked and nearly pulled us both to the ground. It was the
same soldier who had tapped my shoulder to let me

reader's interpretation?
Through Marítole's perspective, the reader
understands the danger of the white soldiers, but
Knobowtee does not yet understand this.
O Through Maritole's perspective, the reader sees that
she succeeds at her mission, but Knobowtee does
not understand the danger she was in.
Through both perspectives, the reader sees that the
soldiers are violent with the women, and Knobowtee is
angry that they hurt Marítole.
Through both perspectives, the reader sees that
Knobowtee should have insisted on going to get their
things because he would have succeeded.
