One of the first examples of slavery in history took place in ancient Greece between the 6th and 4th centuries. Almost a third of the population were considered slaves. Slavery was mostly used in order to expand agriculture, however, slaves were also used in quarry mines and as personal servants. Slaves in Greece did not have any human or civil rights. They would be tortured for many reasons. Their owners could beat them whenever they wanted. If their testimony was needed in law, they would be tortured into confessing their own guilt or into accusing someone else.
