Title the map: AFRICA, Then and Now
Make a directional indicator or compass rose in the bottom right corner.
Make a scale indicator in the bottom right corner in which 1" = 600 miles.
Label the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Indian Ocean, and Cape of Good Hope - use your
mental map!
Label all 54 contemporary nations on the continent of Africa - Careful! You will have to write the names
of West African nations in the Atlantic Ocean area and use arrows to indicate their geographic locations.

Use a ruler and pencil to draw, then label, the Equator at 09, the Tropic of Cancer at 23%' N, and the
Tropic of Capricorn at 23% Slatitudes.
Add a key to your map in the bottom left; title it: European Colonialism, 19 & 20" Century
Put a small box in front of each of the following European country names: Britain, France, Germany,
Belgium, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. Include an uncolored box for the two countries that remained
independent during this scramble for Africa.
Select a different color for each of the European countries; color in the box next to the country name.
Turn to the map on page 480 in the textbook and analyze which European country colonized which
African country.
Use the matching color that you selected in the key for each European country to color-code your map to
show the colonial background of the modern nations.
