Utilizing knowledge of Greek social, political, and economic development, including features such as democracy, the impact of Pericles in Athens, and the Golden Age, analyze how the following Athenian Oath is the embodiment of Greek history and Greek ideals. We will never bring dishonor on our sacred arms
nor will we abandon our comrades wherever we shall be stationed.
We will defend the rights of gods and men and
will not leave our country smaller, when we die, but greater and better.
We will ever strive for the ideals
and sacred things of the city,
both alone and with many;
We will unceasingly seek to quicken
the sense of public duty;
We will revere and obey the city’s laws;
We will transmit this city not only not less,
but greater, better and more beautiful
than it was transmitted to us.
