From Ch. 9. Worth (5 pts.) In regard to the PE "Battle of the Systems":As America survived the Civil War of the 1860s, the viewpoint was oriented toward Physical Education as health and hygiene. Calisthenics from Europe came into trend. Two major systems, one from Germany and the other from Sweden competed for superiority. German calisthenics, was more static and utilitarian much like basic military training of today and was adapted for PE programs in public school. The Swedish system was more dynamic and required more skill of balance and body control, this was adopted by the sport of gymnastics due to the high level of athleticism. The German system was perfect for unskilled, general conditioning, and won "...due to the concern of the nation's young men relative to their physical conditioning and ability to bear arms in defense of the country." It also fits better with mandatory education requirements in the elementary public school movement in big states like California in the 1860s.
