What Do I Have to Do?
Now let’s put all these ideas into practice to apply the six features of S. P.R. I.T. E to the ancient Greek civilizations you studied in this module. Refer to the lessons in Module Four to complete the chart. Then, respond to the reflection questions.
In some areas of daily life, Sparta and Athens were so different that they have been divided into two columns on the chart. In other ways, like religious beliefs, the two were very similar and will share a response.
PART 1:
SPARTA ATHENS

Social Describe society in Sparta. Use the Athens example to guide you.
Lesson 4.03, page 4, 5, 7 Athenian girls did not receive much education and had traditional household roles when they grew up. Athenian women could be citizens, but they could not vote. The primary role of male, land-owning citizens was to participate in direct democracy. Non-male citizens were merchants, farmers. Slaves could not vote.
Political Sparta was an oligarchy, where power was held by a few men, usually wealthy nobles. They had an Assembly. Describe the government in Athens. Use the Sparta example to guide you.

Economy Describe the economy of Sparta.
Lesson 4.03, page 2 Slaves were captured in war and owned by individuals. Freedman were craftsmen and traders. There was a large merchant class. Athens formed the Delian League and grew rich after the Persian War.

PART 2:
Reflection Questions. Answer the following questions in three to four complete sentences each.
1. What are the similarities between the United States government and democracy in Athens?

2. Which city-state (Sparta or Athens) would you prefer to live in and why? Give at least 3 reasons to support your answer.
