In 1830, Porter was appointed recorder of Detroit, and in 1837, he was elected treasurer of the Michigan Pioneer Society. He was elected mayor of Detroit in 1838 and resigned in 1839 to run for the Unitedb States Senate. On March 14, 1839, Asher B. Bates succeeded him as mayor.
