For this assignment, you will consider some of the changes that humans make to the environment. You will consider whether any changes are acceptable or unacceptable. Then you will write an argument about which changes are acceptable, which changes are unacceptable, and why. To get the best grade possible, follow the instructions in the assignment closely and answer all questions completely. This assignment is worth 20 points.

Discussion prompt:

Many civilizations would not exist the way they do without having changed the environment. Many of these changes, such as irrigation, dams, paved streets, and cement building foundations, cause long-term or permanent damage to the environment. What changes to the environment do you consider acceptable for humans to make so that civilizations can exist? What changes to the environment are unacceptable? Why?
In your argument, include your opinion on what changes that humans make to the environment are acceptable and what changes are unacceptable. Support your response with logical reasons and examples that show your understanding of the lesson content. Here are some questions to ask yourself as you prepare and compose your discussion post:

What makes a change acceptable or unacceptable to you? Consider factors such as whether the change saves lives, is necessary for survival, is permanent, and so on.
What are some changes humans have made to the environment to control water? Are any of these changes acceptable or unacceptable?
What are some changes humans have made to the environment to promote farming? Are any of these changes acceptable or unacceptable?
Write one or two paragraphs stating your position. Your paragraphs should be three to five sentences in length and include a topic sentence that clearly states your argument, at least two supporting details, and a concluding sentence.

This section is worth 10 points.

In your second post, respond to the argument of another student whose ideas are different from yours. Provide a counterargument to that student's position. If you are working alone, write a response countering your own argument.
