Why were new taxes such as the Stamp Act and Sugar Act such a surprise to the
colonists after the French and Indian War?
Great Britain had plenty of money and taxing
the colonists did not many sense.
The colonists had prior treaties in place with
Great Britain to prevent taxation on all goods
produced in the colonies.
Colonists were already paying heavy taxes
after the war, adding more to what already
existed was alarming to the colonists.
Prior to these taxes Great Britain upheld a
policy of Salutary Neglect.
