Vasco de Gama explored Africa and reached the coast of India across the Indian Ocean. Afonso de Albuquerque sailed to the Malay Peninsula. The Spaniards sailed west across the Atlantic Ocean to find their way to Asia. Instead of going to Asia, Christopher Columbus reached America and explored the Caribbean islands and Cuba. Ferdinand Magellan passed through a waterway along the top of South America later called the Strait of Magellan. The fleet reached the Philippines and he was killed there.
