Indigenous Influence on Latin America
The Aztec and other groups in northern Latin America were conquered by Spanish invaders in the 1500s, and many of these peoples mixed with the Spanish. There are still nearly a million and a half people in Mexico that speak Nauhatl, the language of the Aztec. The influence of the Aztec is also apparent in Mexican symbolism today. For example, the Mexican coat of arms, shown in the national flag, depicts the event that triggered the founding of the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan.

European Influence on Latin America
Many of the Spanish and Portuguese colonists intermarried with native peoples over the years. The result is that many Latin Americans today have a mix of European and indigenous ancestry. This blended ancestry is sometimes referred to as mestizo, the Spanish word for “mixed.”
The colonial legacy can be heard in the region as well as seen. The most common language is Spanish, which is spoken in most of South America, all of Central America, and on Caribbean islands such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, millions of Brazilians speak Portuguese because of years of Portuguese control over that country.

African Influence on Latin America
West African religion also remains alive as part of Latin American religious tradition. Many of the African slaves who were brought to the region in colonial times were Yoruba people from the areas that are now Nigeria, Benin, and Togo. In Latin America, the Yoruba and their descendants came to mix their traditional beliefs with elements of Roman Catholicism. In Brazil, these mixed traditions evolved into a religion called CandomblĂ©. In Cuba, the people blended Catholicism and West African practices into a religion known as SanterĂa, meaning “way of the saints.”
Some people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic practice what is sometimes called voodoo (Links to an external site.). This religion is another blend of Catholicism with West African religious beliefs. According to voodoo, all beings are spirits, and the spirits of angels, ancestors, and other deceased people help God oversee the world. People perform certain religious rituals in order to honor these spirits.
