Crecimiento del nacionalismo bajo el gobierno de Meiji El nacionalismo también surgió en Japón en la década de 1880, pero allí fue con el patrocinio del
gobierno [Meiji] luego de un período de occidentalización vigorosa. Durante la década de 1870, grandes
cantidades de asesores occidentales se trasladaron a Japón para dotar de personal y administrar a gran
parte del sistema escolar en crecimiento, entre otras tareas. A los funcionarios conservadores, inclusive al
emperador, les preocupaba que el individualismo y otros valores corrosivos (destructivos) de occidente
perjudicaran a la cultura japonesa, y recurrieron al nacionalismo, complementado por el resurgimiento de
la religión sintoísta y otras tradiciones parcialmente inventadas, para garantizar la lealtad al estado y la
jerarquía. El nacionalismo comenzó a usarse para motivar una mayor producción, sacrificios económicos
y otros atributos que ayudaron a impulsar un desarrollo rápido; pronto surgió también un nuevo
imperialismo
