these laws were made so Americans did not lose their opportunity to find women because of the proportion of imigrants. this was a bigger deal in the west because the main route of immigration for these people was the pacific because of the shorter distance.

Both American law and Chinese social custom at the time made it quite difficult for Chinese women to come to this country, so the gender ratios in those early days were extremely skewed. In 1860, only about 5 percent of the Chinese population in America was female.
