The Victorian Era was largely a time of stabilizing governments and expanding empires. Many new nationalistic entities came into being during this time, such as the German Empire and the Kingdom of Italy, as well as the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The reason why western political boundaries changed between 1870-1900 is because of the rise of the Industrial Revolution. Most important, 19th-century Britain underwent political conflict as the urbanization and industrialization of the country generated a need for political and social change.

There were increasing needs for increased social welfare, labor rights, education, political rights, and equality, in addition to the eradication of the slave trade and alterations in the electoral system. As a consequence, the slave trade was eradicated in 1807 and the Great Reform Act was approved by Parliament in 1832. Following the Reform Act, manufacturing cities like Birmingham and Manchester could be signified in Parliament for the first time, thus, considerably changing the political character of parliamentary.

The Industrial Revolution brought basic alterations in the British way of life. Scientific innovations and improvements in technology played a role in the progress of agriculture, shipping and trade, industry, and economic expansion. With the rising of capital and the credit need, banking grew not only in London but also in rural areas. Industrialists, traders, shipbuilders, and other private producers built provincial banks and published banknotes in the form of banknotes and notes, primarily to provide expense for labor and the acquisition of raw materials.
