In the colonial times, The United States suffered from a big amount of immigration. Basically, at the beginning of the 19th century, immigrants came to the U.S. looking for a better job. In 17th to 19th centuries, many African slaves arrived in U.S. territory. It was until 1882 that the U.S. enacted a significant federal law limiting immigration: the Chinese Exclusion Act. In 1892, Ellis Island was the first federal immigration office in America.
