political parties were mixed during my election. i was a self-proclaimed federalist, while my elected vice president was a republican. as the second president of the united states i was blessed with a relatively uneventful term. my greatest accomplishment was in keeping the u. s. out of a war with france. after the xyz affair occurred, many americans were angry and wanted to declare war, but in 1800, i signed an agreement with france assuring peaceful ocean sailing. luckily, a war was avoided.
