The most important aspect of the Northwest Territory provision was the creation of a practice whereby the new federal territories were given automatic access to equal status with the old states. This principle was subsequently applied during the enlargement of the United States to the Pacific coast.

The Northwest Territory was later formed into the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin, and the remainder was merged with the state of Minnesota, west of the Mississippi.
