Nixon's presidency ended with the resignation of President Richard Nixon due to the impeachment he was going to be subjected to as a result of the Watergate scandal.

The event began with the arrest of five men for break-in at the Watergate Democratic Party complex on June 17, 1972. The FBI found a connection between the thieves and black money used by the Committee for the Reelection of the President, the official organization of Nixon's electoral campaign and the Republican Party. In July 1973, thanks to the testimonies of former Nixon officials and staff, investigations conducted by the Watergate Committee of the United States Senate revealed that Nixon had a system of recording tapes and that many conversations had been recorded. After a series of legal battles, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled unanimously that the president should deliver the tapes to government investigators, which he finally agreed to. The recordings directly implicated Nixon in the case. As he was going to be under an impeachment process, Nixon resigned as president on August 9, 1974.
