What roles did black settlers and soldiers play in the west ?

After the war lots of black soldiers became what is known as "Buffalo Soldiers" who would act as something like lawmen of the wild west: bringing wanted bandits to justice, saving lost people, clearing railroads, and lots of other dangerous stuff that other people didn't want to risk helping with.
