Captain Matthew Perry sailed to Tokyo harbour with his gunships in 1853 and forced the Japan to open itself for trade with US, at that time Japan was being ruled by the Tokugawa Shogun( feudal military government of Japan), in which Shogun (military dictators) were at the top.

The forced opening of Japan contributed to the collapse of the Tokugawa rule. It also led to the coup d'etat that dissolved the Feudal government to unite the country under a centralised government to defend itself  against the foreign influence. The Meiji restoration took place in 1868.
