The International Court of Justice was formed to look after the long going disputes of the Pacific settlement and other international territorial disputes and it was formed to settle such kind of disputes. The history of ICJ goes back to classical times. It all initiated with a peace conference that took place in Hague in the year 1899. In this conference, The smaller states of Europe, Some countries from Asia and Mexico also took participation and the idea behind this peace conference was to discuss about peace and disarmament and other issues related to international territorial disputes and Pacific settlement were discussed and Permanent Court of Arbitration came in as a result of this peace conference and the work of that court was to look into the matters of international disputes and try to resolve those issues.

It was until 1943 that this court came under question with regards to the appointment of judges and it was clear that ICJ needed to be given a fair amount of consideration after new political order was established worldwide. All the cases that come to the United Nations related to international disputes are heard in the International Court of Justice.
