After the Civil War, the Nationalists were driven out of mainland China. This war lasted more than twenty years, between 1927 and 1949. It opposed the Chinese nationalist government, under the control of the Kuomintang party, and the Chinese Communist Party, the Comintern. It was the communists and their leader Mao Zedong who won the war and created the Republic of China.

Before the war, these two groups were allies. They had joined their forces to attack some Chinese soldiers who controlled the North of the country. But, this alliance did not last long because of Chiang Kai-shek as the leader of the nationalists did not like the communists. He realized that this party wanted to take control of the whole country alone.

In March 1927, the communist workers in Shanghai took control of the city, and Chiang Kai-shek's nationalist army attacked them. It was the end of the alliance between the two major Chinese political parties that made war until 1950.

There was still a long pause during this civil war caused by the invasion of Japan in 1931. The war between nationalists and communists continued for another 5 years, but the two parties allied in 1936 and formed a great army to defend from Japan.

At the end of the Second World War, when Japan lost and had to leave China, tensions re-emerged between the Comintern and the Kuomintang. The communists were stronger than the nationalists. They needed only five years to conquer all of China and forced their enemies to exile. The Chinese nationalists escaped and settled permanently in islands around China, such as Taiwan, Hainan, and Taipei.

This civil war lasted for four more years, eventually ending in 1949, with the defeat of Chiang Kai-Shek and the Kuomintang party. They were eventually driven out of mainland China and forced to settle in Formosa Island (now Taiwan), while Mao Zedong established a communist state, officially called the People’s Republic of China, on 1st October 1949.
