What did the concordat of 1801 accomplish?

The Concordat of 1801 was an agreement reached between Napoleon and the Roman Pope Pius VII. It would last until 1805.

The objective was to reach national reconciliation between French revolutionaries and Catholics, positioning the Roman Catholic Church again as the major one in France and to restore the status of this institution. The clergy returned either from the exile or from hiding, and assumed again their traditional roles in the churches. The church properties that were seized and sold off during the revolution were not restored.
