The Triple Entente. It was created in 1907 and its members were France, Great Britain and Russia, to which Serbia was later added. It is also known as the "allies". The precedents of this league must be sought in the "Entente Cordiale" of France and the United Kingdom, instituted in 1904. During the conflict Belgium was incorporated (attacked by Germany); Japan (August 1914) aspiring to wrest Germany's Pacific colonies and replace its role as an imperialist power in China; Italy (May 1915); Romania (June 1916), Portugal (March 1916); United States (April 1917); Greece (June 1917); it was also the case of China and several Latin American states. The Triple Alliance was formed in 1882, promoted by the German Chancellor Bismarck. It was constituted by Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. However, the latter did not fulfill its commitments when the war broke out and in principle remained neutral until intervening later as a member of the opposing side. Throughout the conflict new powers adhered to this block: Turkey (October 1914) and Bulgaria (October 1915).
