EXPLANATION  

The US Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act on May 30, 1854. This law gave freedom for people in the Kansas and Nebraska territories to legalize slavery in their territories. The law automatically revoked the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which declared a ban on slavery in the area.  

The Kansas-Nebraska law then angered many people in the North. Missouri compromise is considered to have long entered into an agreement on this slavery. Not waiting for a long time, violence immediately erupted. Anti-slavery people were led directly by John Brown. The death toll was very large. So, the region was nicknamed "the bleeding Kansas".

President Franklin Pierce, who supported pro-slavery residents, ordered the sending of federal troops to stop the violence. In addition, he also ordered the dissolution of the anti-slavery legislature. When elections are held, pro-slavery supporters win the election, but they were accused of cheating.

In result, Congress did not realize the pro-slavery constitution so Kansas was not admitted to becoming a state.

Yet, in the end, the number of anti-slavery supporters outstripped pro-slavery supporters. Then a new constitution was formed.
