Founded by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr in 1889, Hull House was a settlement house in the United States which was open to recently arrived immigrants. It is said that in the Hull House, activities were inspired in what happened within Toynbee Hall, where men "held their recreational clubs and social gatherings at the settlement house among the poor people and in the same style they would in their own circle".

Even though mostly women were responsible for the organization, it wasn't an alternative to domestic labor necessarily since a lot of the work was volunteer.
