Alexander III of Macedon, or as is more commonly known, Alexander the Great, during his reign started to spread the Hellenistic culture in his vast empire, thus marking the beginning of the Hellenistic period. Alexander made a nice mixture, by using his Macedonian culture as basis, and putting on top of it the Hellenic culture, he made a mixture that created the Hellenic culture, which is actually a culture that is a mixture of two totally different cultures that almost didn't had anything in common.

It is ironic, that parts of the Hellenic culture were actually spread out and promoted by a leader of the people they despised, and saw as barbarians. The Hellenistic period lasted some time after Alexander's death, in the part of the empire that was controlled by the Macedonian Ptolemy dynasty.

Note: Hellenic and Hellenistic culture/period is not the same. Hellenic refers to exclusively Greek culture. Hellenistic refers to mixture of Macedonian and Hellenic culture.
