1. Knowing what you know about today’s video games, imagine what it would look like if you had to create a modern-day version of Space Invaders. First, evaluate the basic gameplay of Space Invaders. Then, describe how you would modernize it. What player perspective would you use and why? What new goals, rules, and/or challenges would you incorporate? And, if you had to incorporate one of the new and innovative gaming technologies, which would you select and why? 2. Why do you think over-the-shoulder perspectives are popular for character and story-driven games? Compare and contrast with first, second, and third person.

3. What different factors would you consider when deciding whether to implement a catch-up mechanic in a single-player game vs. a multi-player game? How might you use adaptive AI (vs. “brute force” mechanics) to create a catch-up mechanic in either type of game?

4. Describe a game that you have played (video game or other type of game) that had a good balance between being easy to learn the rules but hard to master overall. Identify specific parts of the gameplay and/or game mechanics that contributed to this balance.

5. Based on the unit content and your own ideas, how would you define a video game in your own words? What separates a regular video game from a “good” video game and explain how immersion is a factor. How would you determine whether a game succeeds or fails in its objectives?\
