The massacre began during the Memorial Day weekend after 19-year-old Di.ck Rowland, a Black shoeshiner, was accused of as.sault.ing Sarah Page, the 17-year-old White elevator operator of the nearby Drexel Building. He was taken into custody. The Tulsa massacre occurred on May 31, 1921 Tulsa was recognized nationally for its affluent African American community known as the Greenwood District. This thriving business district and surrounding residential area was referred to as “Black Wall Street.” In June 1921, a series of events nearly destroyed the entire Greenwood area. Also  Reports estimate the community had more than 10,000 African American residents, and most of them were thriving. Black Wall Street was the epitome of a self-sustaining community and strength. Black people supported each other, which allowed for easier access to resources, savings, housing, jobs, education, and health causing Black Wall Street Successful.
