They are also victims of geo-political politics. Western countries who need the support of Turkey strategically and who supported Saddam Hussein for decades as a bulwark against Iran will therefore not support an independent Kurdish state.

Indeed when Saddam used chemical weapons against the Kurds he acquired them from the West.
