The U2 incident was the shooting down of an American spy plane over the Soviet Union in 1960. This was during The Cold War a period of heightened tension between the USA and Soviet Union.

The USA initially issued false information which suggested that there had been pilot error as it was a deeply embarrassing incident.

However the USSR successfully managed to exploit the situation by not releasing the information that not only had they shot down the plane but also crucially, they had captured the pilot alive, thus allowing the USA to continue publishing a false cover up story.
