W. E. B. DuBois was an American sociologist and civil rights activist. He was also one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. Booker T. Washington was also a civil rights leader, as well as an educator and orator. He was one of the leading voices of the former slaves and their descendants.

The main difference between the two activists was their opinion in regard to the Atlanta Compromise, crafted by Booker T. Washington. The Atlanta Compromise stated that Southern Blacks would submit to white rule as long as they were guaranteed basic education and economic opportunities. DuBois and his supporters rejected this, as they wanted full civil and political rights for all Black people.
