1.Use the following to review the important events, people, movements, and inventions that shaped the early twentieth century. As you review, think about the people who had the greatest effect on the United States in the years from 1900 to 1940.

1. Then, choose five people, one for each of the following categories, who you think had the biggest effect.

• Arts/Entertainment

• Science/Technology/Medicine

(scientists, inventors, physicians, medical researchers, etc.)

• Public Service/Government

(presidents, teachers, activists, politicians, reformers, etc.)

• Sports

(athletes, coaches, etc.)

• Business

(businessmen and women, financiers, industrialists, entrepreneurs, etc.)

As you make your choices, ask yourself these questions to help narrow them down:

• Did this person have an unusual and enduring influence on the nation?

• Did this person change the course of American history?

• Was this person a pioneer in his/her field?

• Was this person fascinating?

• How did the United States change as a result of this person’s actions?
