PROJECT: WOMEN'S RIGHTS The women's rights movement was somewhat pushed to the background during the chaotic years of the 1960s. The civil rights movement, Vietnam, and anti-war protests often took the forefront of American consciousness. Even then, proponents of equal rights for women were busy preparing for a long-anticipated challenge, which culminated in the 1972 Equal Rights Amendment.

The amendment was quickly passed by Congress and went to the states. Many of them jumped on the bandwagon and ratified the amendment. However, a lot of negative publicity surfaced as implications of the amendment became known. The seven-year period to get the amendment ratified came and went without it ever being passed.
