Tips for Writing a Resume Maybe it's been a while since you looked for a job; maybe you are just starting. These tips highlight some key points you can put in your resume to help sell your skills.

Pre-Search Inventory
Before you start your job search, list the accomplishments you are proud of. Then use these to determine what kind of work you like and are good at. Do you shine in groups of people or would you rather work alone? Do you prefer crunching numbers, selling things or working with your hands?

Organizing Your Resume
Put your name, address, phone number and (optional) e-mail address at the top.

Next, under a heading called Job Objective, describe the job you're applying for.

Under a heading called Work Experience, list your qualifications, starting with your strongest ones. Then describe the jobs you've held, starting with the most recent and working backwards. Include job title and dates for each one.

If you have no job experience, list volunteer work, extra-curricular activities, awards or honors you have received. You can include anything that demonstrates why you're the best person for the job.

Detail your strengths with concrete points. Don't be afraid to include percentages or other numbers that tell exactly how well you did something. For example, suppose you sold more dollars worth of tools than most other employees on your last job in a hardware store. If so, list your total dollar sales and compare it with the average.

You'll need a section called Education. This should come first if it outshines your work experience. If not, put it second. Include high school only if you have not attended college or had other training beyond high school. List your most recent degrees or training and work backwards. Include the name of your degree or certificate, the date you completed it and the name of the school or training program. Especially if you have no college degree or high school diploma, include any programs, other courses or outside activities that have taught you special skills. These too are part of your education.

Then, list Military Service if you have any, emphasizing leadership, promotions, and skills acquired. Finally, under a heading called Personal Characteristics, describe games or sports you play that are related to job skills, languages you speak or any other special qualities that make you stand out from others who may apply for the same job.

Fine Points
Your resume should look attractive and professional. Use active words and try to keep your resume to one page. Begin each section with a bold heading and leave some space between each section if you can. Type your resume on standard-sized paper with no misspellings or erasures. If you intend to send your resume to more than one place, copy your resume using a good quality copier.
