Tensions were high after  world war 2 because of a new  threat- the  Soviets and the east, and the image of  Germany from the previous war wasn't completely gone. The once glorious Germany was gone, having been beaten in two world wars, and the USSR was still a massive power. World War 2 ended with a dramatic conclusion, with the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the Soviets raising their flag over the Reichstag in Berlin. In Berlin, it was divided into East  and West, and the Berlin wall would be built in 1961, 4 years before  the  start of Vietnam. The west feared communist invasion- and even an operation was devised to defend against a soviet attack, known as "Operation Unthinkable."

Each side feared attack from one another so they formed pacts or treaties with other nations as a defense. The  Soviets with the Warsaw Pact, and the West with NATO, North Atlantic Treaty Organization. These tensions would remain  until the end of the Cold War in 1991, when the Soviet Union fell on December 26th.

du boi was considered a radical because he wanted the immediate end for segregation. the biggest different between him and booker t. washington is that, even though washington believed that segregation should be considered illegal, he did not believe at all that a law was needed to keep blacks away from whites and that this would be something natural (to have the races apart) for a long time until society adjusted, while du boi believe that agitation was the only way to end segregation.
