Why did the British have colonies abroad/overseas?

For natural resources provided by the colonies and opportunities for trading/doing business.

They were competing for to have the most power and biggest number of colonies with other empires like Spain.

Opportunities to get wealth and have more land.

Some examples of colonies:

Ex. South Africa, Hong Kong, Iraq, Bermuda, Kuwait, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India (British India) Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Some islands in Caribbean Sea

How were they able to achieve this?

Some reasons were: exploration, charters from the British king/government, trade, largest navy on earth/wars, settlers coming in to new places and multiplying and they claimed the area

People went on explorations to find new land and hopefully wealth. England did this through charters from the British king/government. Trade was used to get goods that weren't available in your area by giving goods made in your area. The largest navy on Earth during this time was the Royal Navy with 7 aircraft carriers (and 5 more under construction), 15 battleships and battlecruisers (and 5 more under construction), 66 cruisers (and 23 more under construction), 184 destroyers (and 52 under construction). Settlers travelled to new areas in search of more land, better goods, possibly more food, and wealth.
