Think about and discuss the various labels that have been used across US history, from the Civil War to current times, to describe the psychological distress that comes from participating in war- insanity/melancholia, battle fatigue, being shell-shocked, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). What in the culture produces these labels? Why have the labels changed/evolved over time, and what do the differences suggest, about us, and about how we view war?​
