In honor of Women’s History month… Name and describe a famous/known woman in your life who has had a significant impact on you

Madam C.J Walker was an African American entrepreneur, and a political social activist, she was the first female self-made Millionaire in America. Her parents were former slaves, and she was an orphan by the age of 7. She suffered a great deal of hair loss, that gave her an idea to make African American hair products, she promoted her products by travelling around the country giving lecture-demonstrations. Walker was born Sarah Breedlove on December 23, 1867, on a cotton plantation near Delta, Louisiana. Her parents, Owen and MInerva, were enslaved and recently freed and Sarah, who was their fifth child, was the first in her family to be free-born. After she was orphaned at the age of 7, she was sent to live with her sister, Louvinia and her brother-in-law. The three moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1877, where Sarah picked cotton and was likely employed doing household work. After escaping her oppressive working environment and the frequent mistreatment she suffered from her brother in-law, Walker married a man and had her first daughter. During the 1890’s, Sarah developed a scalp disorder that caused her to lose hair, and she began to experiment with both home remedies and store- bought hair care treatments in an attempt to improve hair condition. After creating her magnificent invention she changed her name and demonstrated her product and it was named after her. This invention helped both women and African Americans influencing them to open their own businesses and helping African American woman be able to fix up their hair.

She's Katherine Johnson

Creola Katherine Johnson ( Coleman; August 26, 1918 – February 24, 2020) was an American mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics as a NASA employee were critical to the success of the first and subsequent U.S. crewed spaceflights.During her 35-year career at NASA and its predecessor, she earned a reputation for mastering complex manual calculations and helped pioneer the use of computers to perform the tasks. The space agency noted her "historical role as one of the first African-American women to work as a NASA scientist".

Johnson's work included calculating trajectories, launch windows, and emergency return paths for Project Mercury spaceflights, including those for astronauts Alan Shepard, the first American in space, and John Glenn, the first American in orbit, and rendezvous paths for the Apollo Lunar Module and command module on flights to the Moon. Her calculations were also essential to the beginning of the Space Shuttle program, and she worked on plans for a mission to Mars.

In 2015, President Barack Obama awarded Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2016, she was presented with the Silver Snoopy Award by NASA astronaut Leland D. Melvin and a NASA Group Achievement Award. She was portrayed by Taraji P. Henson as a lead character in the 2016 film Hidden Figures. In 2019, Johnson was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.
