What were the Living Conditions like during the Industrial Revolution?

The living conditions during and after the Industrial Revolution were not pretty, it was actually very horrid for a lot of people. Both the working and living conditions were unsafe and unsanitary.

The North was impacted by the Industrial Revolution the most, as focusing on industrialization was what they were doing. The soil and climate there was not the best for agriculture, like the South, so factories and industries were the main source of income in the North.

Workers during the Industrial Revolution were often housed in crowded and unsanitary places, as they barely made enough money to buy food. The working conditions were very unsafe and hazardous, causing many deaths and injuries. Factory owners did not care about this, as they saw workers as easily replaceable. If someone got hurt on the job, they could just hire somebody new and simply fire the other person.

Since there were new buildings being built, for both living purposes and jobs, many people started coming to the North. Some were farmers who had exhausted the soil and cotton prices were not doing so good, some were African Americans who were sick of the racist South, some were immigrants coming from foreign countries, all sorts of people flocked to the North. This caused crime to go up, along with the terrible sanitation in living quarters. Since steel was being used now, many large apartment complexes were being made, but there was still no indoor plumbing during this time. This made sanitation terrible and a lot of times fires were common.
