Oberlin Collegiate Institute founded in September 1833, by two Presbyterian Pastors, John Jay Sipherd and Philo P. Stewart. Oberlin College, with their motto Learning and Labor, located in Oberlin, Ohio and became the first coeducational institute. It means that Oberlin college is the oldest education institutional to admit women. It is also the first college admitted African American.

In 1833, there were fifteen women admitted to Oberlin college, but they only admitted to the preparatory program, not the traditional college education. Started in 1837, women can be admitted to the college program. There were four women admitted in 1837 and they were received their bachelor degree from Oberlin College in 1841. They are Mary Kellog, Mary Hosford, Elizabeth Smith Prall, and Mary Caroline Rudd, these first women are sometimes known as "the Oberlin Four.

In 1850, Oberlin Collegiate Institute became Oberlin College. It offered formal instruction and coursework in the classics, sciences, fine art, and music.
